Co-working is all the rage, but not all co-working spaces are equal. A few desks and wifi does not a co-working space make. You must build an environment. One that fosters creativity and collaboration without sacrificing the ability to hunker down get things done.

When Sagamore Ventures wanted to activate the central hall of City Garage, they looked to award-winning coworking space Betamore, an incubator and campus for technology and entrepreneurship, home to 100+ companies that have collectively raised more than $52M in venture capital and in contributed $13.5M to Baltimore City’s economy in 2015.

And thus, Betamore opened its second campus for new and growing businesses. It is a place to connect with other members and work with the founder directly for mentorship and product development. The excitement and energy of CityGarage begins at the street, where the jet black building and wall of windows surround a fire-engine red facade and bold, but simple, signage.

Once inside, the bustling first floor explodes with energy in its intersecting lines, natural wood, poured concrete, and wrought iron. Reclaimed wood tables under descending, oversized light bulbs on red and white strings of varying height flank either side of a huge glass aquarium-like structure, walled space for classroom trainings and larger events. Modular hexagonal stools nest together and pull apart for endless combinations of conversation. Private offices upstairs overlook the open first floor filled with movers and shakers building business and working together on innovative projects.
